About FOWL

Friends of the Wakefield Libraries, FOWL, is an organization established in 1987 to encourage understanding, appreciation and support of Wakefield's two libraries.  It serves as a medium through which friends of the libraries may become acquainted and share their enthusiasm for books and other media.  As a group, we focus on how to better serve the needs of the libraries; where some time is spent raising funds to aid the library when the needs go beyond the library budget.

The Friends meet at 12:00 on the second Wednesday of every month.  Except for the summer months of July and August, we meet in the back room of Poor People's Pub to enjoy lunch while learning about the current status of the library and its programs.

Book Sale

Watch for our annual summertime book sale. Friends and community members alike donate books, CDs, DVDs, puzzles, and more throughout the year.  During mid-to-late August, when our storage area can't hold any more, we move, categorize and arrange all the donations to the Wakefield Opera House.  We then open the doors on Friday and Saturday for your browsing and buying pleasure!

Wreath Sale

The annual Wreath Sale starts in early-November when orders for the limited number of wreaths are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  The double-sided 24" balsam wreaths are decorated with hand made bows and pine cones.  Fragrant and fresh, the wreaths are distributed the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Place your order early! Art at the Gafney

Art at the Gafney was first organized in 2008 by then Exhibit Coordinator, Peter Abate, who gathered together and exhibited two pieces of artwork from various area artists at the Gafney.  One piece was for show or sale and the other was a donated piece to the library for raffle.  Over the years the annual fundraiser has been enjoyed by many.

An opening reception is held in early June, sponsored by the Friends of Wakefield Libraries.  Raffle tickets are sold during June and July with the fundraiser culminating in a closing reception where the raffle tickets are drawn and many happy art lovers walk away with an original piece of art.
